Razer are set to cash in on the release of Starcraft II with their lineup of new licensed gaming accessories. There’s the new Marauder keyboard, a headset called the Banshee and this new mouse, The Razer Spectre.

The Spectre is a lightweight, five button mouse with a distinctive design that is inspired by StarCraft II (or Starcraft II:Wings of Liberty, to give it it’s full title).

Its main features are obviously aimed at the RTS market and are heavily biased towards improving actions per minute (APM), which is the speed at which RTS gamers can fire off instructions to their in-game units. Apparently newbies typically generate 40-60 actions per minute, but the best pro-gamers can be running at over 300APM at the most frantic points in the game.

One key aspect to improving APM is the ability to vary the force required to activate the left-click button, allowing the player to tailor the feel between speed (light response) or control (a firmer click) . The affect on APM can then be monitored by the newly developed multi-colour APM Lighting System, which varies its shades depending on the current APM rate.

Underneath the shell of the Spectre is is Razer’s excellent 5,600dpi 3.5G laser sensor with its 1000Hz polling rate (meaning a response time of 1 millisecond).

The Razer Spectre Starcraft II mouse will be retailing for $79.99 when it hits the stores next month.

Razer Spectre Specifications

Lightweight, Fingertip-Grip 5 Button Mouse

5600 DPI Razer Precision 3.5G Laser sensor

Mouse Click Button Force Adjustment

You may be forgiven for thinking that the Mionix Naos isn’t a new mouse, but don’t worry, this really is a new design.

Yes, Mionix already offer the Naos as part of their excellent range of mice, but that is a 5,040dpi mouse with a laser sensor whereas the new Naos 3200 uses Mionix’s first LED-optical sensor capable of 3,200dpi.

Why the reduction in dpi? Because the optical sensor is much more accurate than a laser or infrared sensor and is often the first choice for serious FPS players.

With the exception of the sensor the Naos 3200 is identical to it’s laser powered twin. That means an ergonomic right-handed design with seven programmable buttons. The new sensor offers three levels of dpi and an adjustable polling rate (up to 1000Hz), while the onboard memory allows macros to be assigned to any of the buttons. There is also the same LED lighting that offers a wide spectrum of colours.

Technical Specifications

7 buttons (7 programmable)

3 steps in-game dpi adjustment

Configurable dpi up to 3200 dpi

Built-in memory

Adjustable polling rate

Weight: 99 gr

Full speed USB 2.0 with Plug n Play

Cable length: 2 m (braided for durability)

Sensor Specification

3200 dpi gaming LED-optical sensor

3,5 mm lift distance

1 ms response time

6469 frames/sec

Tracking speed: 1 m/sec (40 ips)

5.8 megapixels/sec image processing

It’s been a while since left-handed gamers have had a decent gaming mouse to play with so they’ll be glad to hear of the new left-handed Razer Deathadder.

This new version of the Deathadder is simply a mirror image of the ergonomic right-handed design that’s proven to be so popular. Specification-wise it’s identical to its right handed brother, with five programmable buttons and a 3,500dpi infrared sensor with 1000Hz polling. But now the side buttons are on the right and the ergonomic design fits snugly into the left hand.

The Razer Deathadder is still one of my favourite gaming mice (my original 1,800dpi version is still going strong) so left handers are getting a quality mouse, but they’re hardly spoilt for choice. Hopefully this is a sign that Razer are considering switching their other ergonomic designs (Imperator, wireless Mamba) to the dark left-hand side, and if Razer can prove there are enough buyers out there then other manufacturers are sure to follow. Left handed Logitech G9x, anyone?

The left-handed version of the Razer Deathadder will be shipping on 24th March at a retail price of $59.99.

It’s time for another mouse review, and this time I’ve gone for the Razer Imperator. It’s new, being the latest design from Razer, and claims to offer a comfortable gaming experience with it’s ergonmic right-handed form and new adjustable side buttons.

So What Do You Get With The Razer Imperator?

As you’d expect with Razer the packaging is top notch. The feelgood factor starts with the stylish black box that presents you with a good look at the mouse, as well as a useful breakdown of all of the best features.

Carefully opening the box revels the Imperator, a quick install guide, a Mac install guide, a full instruction booklet, a cardboard coaster for your desk, a ‘certificate of authenticity’, another cardboard picture of the Imperator, a Razer product catalogue, two Razer logo stickers, an invitation to the Raptr.com gaming service and a cuddly toy … ok, maybe not a cuddly toy, but that’s a nice pile of stuff all packaged in a smart black envelope.

The Imperator is all black, with a matt black rubbery coating on the top and smooth gloss black sides. The only colour comes from the blue lighting of the Razer logo on the top of the mouse and down the edges of the scrollwheel (a nice touch). There are seven buttons in total, including the two adjustable thumb buttons and two small buttons that sit at the base of the scroll wheel. The scroll wheel itself is a ‘normal’ one with clicky movement and no tilt actions.

Connection is made via a gold-plated USB plug that sits on the end of a seven-foot long braided cable. This is an improvement that Razer are adding to more of their mice in place of the old thin cord that could get tangled quite easily.

Setting Up The Razer Imperator

As with most gaming mice these days the Imperator works out of the box by simply plugging it into a spare USB socket. But you’re missing out on the best features if that’s all you do, as you really need to install the Razer driver software to get the most out of it. A simple 27Mb download gives you the ability to program the buttons, adjust the max dpi and each of the adjustable levels and tailor things such as cursor acceleration.

What’s Different About The Razer Imperator?

Yes, I know, the Imperator looks like every other Razer mouse. Black with blue lighting, it’s a nice design but it’s starting to look a bit familiar now. Perhaps Razer’s design team ought to be introduced to the other colours of the spectrum, or maybe we should let them know that you can mould plastic in colours other than black.

However, there is more to the Imperator than you might think. The ergonomic design is smaller than that of the Deathadder and Mamba, with a less pronounced arch to its back. It fits more snugly into the palm of the hand and is better suited to those with small hands, but it is still more of a palm-gripper than claw grip. There are slight contours on the left side to support your thumb, something that Razer haven’t done for a while, and add to the feeling of comfort.

The unique feature of the Imperator is those sliding buttons, controlled by a lever underneath the mouse. I found that I wanted to move them slightly further back than they’d go – not much further, but when you’re promised a feature and it doesn’t quite deliver it’s slightly disappointing. I also think the buttons are a bit thin – the Deathadder’s side buttons are much thicker and better to use.

One suggestion for the Razer design team is some sort of LED/LCD display for highlighting the current dpi level. It works well on other mice so no reason why it shouldn’t on a Razer mouse.

Is It Any Good?

Quite simply, yes! The 3.5G laser sensor is the same as you’ll find in all of Razer’s top mice, offering up to 5,600dpi with on-the-fly adjustability. It works extremely well, and the two buttons on top of the mouse are ideal for swapping dpi levels.

The sensor, positioned centrally in the base of the mouse, responded perfectly at all times and I never had issue with it. Whether on low dpi or high, the tracking was superb. I kept the polling rate set to the maximum of 1000Hz and settled on a max of 2,400dpi, but that’s the beauty of the driver software – if you think that 5,600dpi is way too sensitive then just turn it down until you’re happy.

The buttons are also a joy to use, firm and responsive without being too hard to press, and the scroll wheel has a good positive action.

Anything Wrong With The Imperator?

No, there’s nothing seriously wrong with it, but there are a few minor niggles. I’ve already mentioned the first problem above i.e. the side buttons didn’t meet my expectations. Another minor point is that the lovely glossy plastic on the sides is a great way of displaying your fingerprints. Any smudges or dirt stand out surprisingly well on the shiny finish.

However, the biggest flaw is the current asking price. At $80 RRP the Imperator is a touch too pricy for my liking, especially when compared to competition such as the cheaper but better specced Logitech G500. I bought my Imperator through Ebay for $77 (including postage), but a quick check on Amazon reveals that prices have already dropped below $70. I’m sure that price will be down to nearer $60 in a few months time.

Conclusion

Pros

New ergonomic shape

Excellent sensor

Cons

Adjustable thumb buttons are a let-down

Glossy surface shows off fingerprints

Expensive

The Razer Imperator is a subtle change in ergonomic design for Razer and it works. The new shape is nice, more contoured than Razer’s other right-handed mice, and it could win over some of the people who weren’t keen on the bigger mice such as the Deathadder or Mamba.

The adjustable thumb buttons are a nice idea but to be honest I prefer the bigger fixed buttons on the Deathadder, and the glossy surfaces show off any greasy fingerprints. Don’t eat crisps while using this mouse!

But don’t let that those minor points put you off, as under the shell is a great sensor that will give you hours of gaming satisfaction. Overall the Razer Imperator is another excellent gaming mouse and worthy of your attention.

Unfortunately I’m not jetting off to Germany for this year’s CeBIT show, but if I was going to be there I’d be one of the first people to see the new wireless Roccat Pyra mouse.

This is Roccat’s latest gaming peripheral and their first attempt at a wireless mouse. Not only that, it’s also their first product to feature what they’re calling an EasyShift[+] button. Exact details are sketchy at the moment, but it doubles the number of functions of the 5-button Pyra – it sounds like a glorified Shift button to me.

The wireless Pyra features the same polling rate as a wired mouse (1000Hz) to minimise lag. The resolution of the sensor can be set between 400dpi to 1600dpi, not high by current standards but more than adequate for most games. The Pyra will make use of the same macro and profile manager that comes with the Kone mouse and Valo keyboard.

More details to follow as and when they emerge from CeBit 2010.

Having just posted my review of the excellent Logitech G500 I thought I’d just double check the price on Amazon. It’s a good job I did, as it turns out that Amazon and Logitech have got together to offer a $15 rebate on the price of a G500.

That means you can buy the G500 for just $56.99, fill out a form and send it in with your invoice and then receive $15 back from Logitech. That means a new G500 will cost you only $41.99 – that’s a great price for such a great mouse!

There are other retailers in the scheme too – Buy.com, Newegg.com, TigerDirect.com, CircuitCity.com, J&R Electronics, B&H Photo, Beach Camera/Buy Dig, PC Richard, Electronics Expo and 6th Avenue Electronics.

Hurry though, the offer runs out on 30th January – just nine more days to go.

The Logitech G500 is part of Logitech’s excellent ‘G’ range of gaming accessories. As with just about every mouse these days the G500 boasts a ridiculously sensitive laser sensor, this one offering a staggering 5,700dpi, as well as a few other features that make it stand out as a choice for best gaming mouse – ten buttons, adjustable dpi, variable weights and onboard memory.

So What Do You Get With The Logitech G500?

Logitech haven’t quite mastered the art of making interesting packaging. The G500 comes in a boring box that’s covered in a short list of features in various languages, with a handful of small photos of the bext bits. It’s not got that ‘wow, that looks cool’ factor that you get from companies like Razer and Mionix.

Open the box and things get more interesting, as inside you’ll find:

a shiny new Logitech G500

a stylish weight box containing twelve weights

the weight cartridge

manuals, including a quick start guide, user guide, ‘important’ health and safety information and an ad for the rest of the ‘G’ range

The mouse itself is a familiar design, an evolution of the old Logitech G5. It’s got a distinctive silvery pattern (tarnished metal?) on top and hard plastic with a gritty texture along the sides. There are ten buttons available on the G500 – the two main buttons, scrollwheel click plus left/right tilt, two dpi buttons on the top left and three more buttons on the left side. The G500 also has a braided cable with a silver USB connector (the cheapskates didn’t gold-plate it).

There is another button, just below the scrollwheel. This switches the wheel between a normal ‘clicky’ action and Logitech’s ‘hyper-scrolling’ action, where the wheel spins freely with surprisingly little friction – give it a good flick and it’ll carry on spinning for some time.

Also on top of the mice are three red LEDs. These indicate the current DPI setting from a total of three, each of which can be configured using the Logitech Setpoint drivers. By default the two buttons on top of the G500 control the dpi switching. It’s a simple system that works very well.

Flip over the mouse and you’ll find the slot for the weight cartridge. Yes, the G500 has a variable weight system using the same mechanism as the old G5. A removable cartridge holds up to six weights, and in the very smart weight box you will find six 4.5g and six 1.7g weights. You can mix and match any combination of weights up to 27g. I loaded up the maximum weight and immediately liked the new feeling, but then I like a hefty feel to my mice.

One thing to note is that the sensor on the G500 is not in the centre – it’s mounted towards the front of the mouse.

Setting Up The Drivers For The Logitech G500

One thing that Logitech are good at is producing good driver software, and the G500 is no exception. The only downside is that there is no installation CD with the mouse so you have to visit the website to download the latest version of the Setpoint driver software (just over 20Mb) but this is no great hardship.

Once installed Setpoint is very easy to use and gives you full control over the mouse. It gives you the ability to setup the three dpi levels for the G500 from just 200dpi all the way up to 5,700dpi and the x and y-axis can have different levels. The polling rate can be configured (from 125Hz to 1000Hz) as well as mouse speed and cursor acceleration.

Each of the button actions can be configured in the usual way, with standard Windows functions, mouse functions, keyboard keys or macros being available to choose from. The macro editor is very easy to use, allowing you to record your key strokes with ease. Configuring the buttons is important because some older games won’t recognise the mouse tilt or third side button, so you’ll need to reprogram the mouse to trigger the command you want.

The final feature of Setpoint is that it allows you to setup five different profiles and assign them to the mouse’s memory. You can then pick a button to switch between the profiles, or you can save the profile on the hard drive and have it load automatically when you start a particular game.

What’s the Logitech G500 Like In Use?

If you’re a left-handed gamer then you probably won’t want the G500 as it’s an ergonomic design aimed at right-handers. Fortunately I’m right-handed and I have to say I found the G500 incredibly pleasing to hold, fitting into the palm of my hand perfectly. From that you can probably guess that I prefer a palm grip, rather than claw grip, and if you are a claw gripper then the G500 probably isn’t for you.

I don’t like the hard plastic that runs along the sides, preferring the soft rubber that you find on many other mice, but other than that the G500 feels great.

So time to get gaming with the G500. A good test of a gaming mouse’s sensor is a FPS so I started off with Far Cry 2, followed by some online action with Left 4 Dead. Through a few long sessions of mercenary and zombie slaughtering the G500 never skipped a beat. The tracking from the sensor was superb, remaining accurate throughout, and the lift-off distance is reasonable at around 2mm – other mice are better but I have definitely played with worse. The dpi switching works a treat, with the two buttons being in an ideal spot for switching up and down (easier to reach than those on the similar MX518), and the LEDs give an easy indication as to where you are on the scale.

The feel of the buttons is equally good, requiring minimal pressure and responding with a positive click. The left thumb buttons are particularly good, each one being light but with a shape that makes it easy to pick out the correct button. I don’t think I hit the wrong button once.

Switching to a bit of real-time strategy I fired up Dawn Of War 2 (I’m loving that game at the moment). Yet again the G500 handled the pace with ease, and the extra buttons proved useful for some of the popular in-game commands. It’s great to be able to move some of the many keyboard shortcuts onto the mouse, to take some of the strain from your left hand – I find that in a fierce firefight I can easily lose my place on the keyboard and be pressing the wrong keyboard button.

Back in Windows and it’s more of the same … accurate tracking and a nice feel to the buttons.

What’s Wrong With The G500?

The scrollwheel of the G500 is compromised by that hyper-scrolling mechanism. The free-wheeling action is of very little use for games as the srcoll wheel is usually used for selecting weapons/items from a list, and for that you want a one-click-at-at-time movement to ensure you pick the right object. Unfortunately when you put the G500 into clicky mode the wheel feels a bit cheap and flimsy – I hope it’s built to last (*cough* Roccat Kone *cough). I think the G500 could have done without this feature and should have stuck with a normal mousewheel – a similar criticism can be aimed at the more expensive G9x.

Another minor point is that gritty texture on the sides – it doesn’t feel as nice as those rubbery coatings on other mice, but then I suppose it’ll wear better over time.

Buying A Logitech G500

I bought my G500 from Amazon for the princely sum of $56.99, undercutting the retail price of $69. Not a bad price at all for such a feature-packed mouse, and a good discount considering it’s not been on sale for long.

Conclusion

Pros

Comfortable shape

Plenty of buttons with good layout

Feels solid and built to last (with the exception of the scrollwheel)

Cons

The scrollwheel

I had high hopes for the Logitech G500 and it met them with ease. It’s difficult to find anything wrong with it and not once did it offer any sign of a fault or problem. The sensor performs well, the buttons are all easily accessible and it’s shape fitted my palm perfectly.

However, it’s not perfect. I find that hyper-scrolling action on the wheel is unnecessary on a gaming mouse and makes it feel flimsy. You can also tell that Logitech took the cheaper option in a couple of areas – the surface of the mouse would have been better coated in the same rubbery substance as used by the likes of Razer and Mionix, or even Logitech themselves on the more expensive G9x.

Also, the USB connector should have been gold-plated – it might not make any difference in-game but if other companies are doing it on cheaper mice then it makes Logitech look a bit tight.

Nit-picking aside, I really like the Logitech G500 and give it a big ‘thumbs up’ – it’s a fantastic gaming mouse at a good price. In fact, I think I prefer it to the more expensive G9x – my previous recommendation for the best gaming mouse.

If you like your gaming mice to look like a reject from the set of a bad sci-fi movie you should take a look at the new range of Mad Catz Cyborg R.A.T.s.

There are no less than four new mice in the range, starting at just $49 for the basic Cyborg R.A.T. 3 and going up to $129 for the all-singing, all-dancing Cyborg R.A.T. 9. The range includes most of the features you’d expect to see on a decent gaming mouse, including a choice of high dpi sensors (3200dpi, 400dpi or 5600dpi), adjustable weights and a choice of wired or wireless, but there’s no LED lighting to tickle your fancy.

However, the weird looks aren’t just for show … the top three models allow you to adjust tthe shape of the mouse to match your grip. The length can be adjusted on the top three models, while the top two also allow the ‘pinkie grips’ and palm rest to be moved.

Having looked at the pictures I want to say that this is the most stupid design I’ve ever seen for a mouse … but I can’t, there’s something strangely badass about the design that really appeals to me! That doesn’t mean they’ll be comfortable though, with all of those bumps and gaps I doubt the R.A.T. range will as pleasing to hold as the my trusty old Deathadder.

Cyber Snipa are ready to join the 5000dpi club with their new Silencer mouse.

The Cyber Snipa Stinger is one of my favourite gaming mice, as it combines a great set of features with a cheap price. It looks like the Silencer is set to repeat that winning formula by combining a 5000dpi laser sensor with a few other features and still undercut the competition by some margin.

The laser sensor is adjustable from just 100 up to 5000dpi with a choice of 4 dpi levels for in-game adjustment. The polling rate of 1000Hz rate is up there with the best and the sensor is capable of reading 7,400 frames/second and can track at speeds of up to 150 inches/second.

The Cyber Snipa Silencer has a little more up its sleeve than just a new laser. There are nine buttons, each of which can be re-programmed in one of seven gaming profiles, allowing the Silencer to have up to 63 functions or macros assigned to it. Mind you, the chances of me remembering how I allocated up 63 actions across nine buttons are slim, but if I ever did manage to get my memory working properly then it’s nice to know that the Silencer can hold more profiles than most of the competition (who seem to stop at five profiles).

Another nice touch is a choice of two side grips. Both grips are made of rubber with one featuring a smooth surface while the other is grooved for added finger support. While it’s an idea that’s been executed more successfully by Logitech on the G9 and G9x, this is a nice touch that could make the Silencer a comfortable proposition for more gamers.

The final feature is a weight changing system. A cartridge holds up to six 4.9gram weights, allowing you to add up to 29.4 grammes to the Silencer.

The Cyber Snipa Silencer is not available just yet but can be pre-ordered from Amazon for just $50.99, significantly undercutting the retail price of $64.99.

Mionix make some great gaming kit (check out my Mionix Saiph 3200 review) but the new Mionix Naos 5000 looks like it’s going to be their best product yet.

Packed full of features, the Naos 5000 is an ergonomic design that builds on the success of the Saiph. The new design is wider than the Saiph and supports all five fingers, making it perfect for gamers who like a palm grip. The entire surface of the Naos is covered in rubber to ensure a good grip.

At the heart of the Mionix Naos is a new 5,040dpi laser sensor that has an adjustable polling rate of up to 1000Hz (1 millisecond) and features an adjustable lift-off distance. It supports three levels of dpi for in-game adjustability and these are accessed by the two buttons on top of the mouse. Three LEDs on the left side give you an indication of which DPI level is active.

There is a new feature unique to the Naos, the amusingly named S.Q.A.T. Standing for Surface Quality Analyzer Tool, the Naos measures the tracking quality of the surface its being used on. This allows you to test your mousepad or desk surface and make sure you don’t have any tracking issues with a poor surface.

As with the Saiph 3200, the Naos features a centralised weight tuning system that allows you to add up eight 5g weights for a total of 40g. Any weights you add are kept in the centre of the mouse, making it more neutrally balanced.

There are seven buttons in total, all of which can be programmed with a key, mouse command or macro. The settings for these can be stored in the on-board memory that has space for up to five different button profiles, and you can move between profiles with a single click of a button.

Last, but not least, the Naos features a new LED lighting system that’s a big improvement on the Saiph (one of my few criticisms of that mouse). Six LEDs are responsible for lighting up the scrollwheel, DPI buttons, DPI indicators and the logo. You can choose which of the LEDs are lit and specify the colour from any of 24 shades.

The Mionix Naos 5000 is available now, and I can’t wait to give it a try.
